With any new system which is implemented, changes tend to be made in the first few months to iron out any issues that come to light. Another change has just been made to the Walt Disney World Genie+ Service.
Due to huge crowds at the Walt Disney World parks over the past week where all four parks have hit capacity, Disney has made the decision to move three previously Individual Lightning Lane Attractions to the Genie+ Service beginning Feb 25. This should help to alleviate some of the crowds as we head to Spring break and beyond.
The three attractions that as of Feb 25 have moved to the Genie+ Service and will no longer be available as Individual Lightning Lanes are:
- Space Mountain (Magic Kingdom Park)
- Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (Disney’s Hollywood Studios)
- Frozen Ever After (EPCOT)
These three popular attractions will continue to be available within Genie+ Lightning Lane Selections until August 7, 2022 when we assume they will return to Individual Lightning Lane Selections.
This same change happened over the Holiday period between December 19, 2021 and January 3, 2022 to help with crowds. We are therefore expecting to see Expedition Everest (Disney’s Animal Kingdom) to appear in Genie+ Lightning Lane Selection rather than Individual Lightning Lane when it returns after its refurbishment which is currently set at April 30, 2022.
There has been a huge outcry from fans who are unhappy about the Genie+ Lightning Lane Service and Individual Lightning Lane since it was introduced although uptake was reported in Disney’s First Quarterly Financial Report For 2022 as being around 50%. We are guessing we will see further changes to the system during 2022, however, we expect this system to be in place for the long haul much to many guests despair.
At the beginning of February, Disney modified the My Disney Experience App to make it easier for guests to link their Lightning Lane and dining reservations via a QR code.
On February 21, Disney made another change and announced that those guests purchasing a one-day ticket to Walt Disney World will no longer be able to pre-book the $15 Genie+ service prior to their visit through the My Disney Experience App. They will only be able to purchase it on the day of their visit.
