Earlier today at the IAAPA virtual trade show Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro provided a new look inside the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind attraction building now under construction at EPCOT. This attraction is very far along in development, with construction on this first-of-its kind roller coaster continuing at the park, potentially in preparation for a likely 2022 debut. You can check out the official photo of the ride show building, which includes some of the track below:
Though the track looks a little tame from this single photo (and it looks like none of the physical sets or screens are up yet) its worth remembering that when complete this attraction will feature a new innovation from Walt Disney Imagineering that allows ride vehicles to rotate 360 degrees so guests can focus attention on the action and story of the ride. This ride will also feature a reverse launch, which is a first for a Disney coaster!
UPDATE: Disney has also released a video of a small section of track testing the ride’s 360 degree turning system off-site:
No updated opening target was shared at the recent virtual trade show presentation, but rumors suggest that this attraction is now looking at a 2022 opening date with more details likely to be shared next year, especially as more information about Walt Disney World’s plans for post-COVID recovery come into focus.
Though 2021 is shaping up to be a big year for roller coasters in Central Florida with Icebreaker, Iron Gwazi, and VelociCoaster all scheduled to open next year, it looks like 2022 will have its own exciting thrill addition! Are you excited for this new attraction?
