Alton Towers is owned by Merlin Entertainments and is one of the UK’s largest theme parks. It is notorious for its Secret Weapon Attractions and there is now a rumour that SW9 is being planned for the park.
Towers Times has reported that Alton Towers is to hold a public exhibition on Monday 19th September, 2022 (1-3pm and 4:30-6:30pm in the Alton Towers Conference Centre) to discuss the proposal for a new indoor attraction on the former site of Alton Mouse in Coaster Corner.
Coaster Corner was situated to the west of the now World of David Walliams and The Alton Towers Dungeon. It was an area of the park which used to house three roller coasters; Alton Beast, Alton Mouse and 4 Man Bob but has not be accessible to the public since 1992 and is now used as an area for storage.
The problem with this area has been linked with noise impact for the residents of the village of Alton and is likely why it has not been developed on over the last 30 years.
With the rumour that SW9 would be an indoor attraction, this would certainly look to help to solve the noise impact problem. However, there has been no official word regarding the location for this proposed new secret weapon and we currently have limited details. We are aware that many of the people living in Alton Village are certainly not keen on noise from the theme park so we will have to wait and see what comes from the public exhibition to see if planning permission is even a possibility on the former site of Coaster Corner.
Currently Alton Towers has 8 Secret Weapon attractions which include:
- SW1 – 1991 Arrow Pipeline Coaster themed around a secret military facility hence the code name Secret Weapon which has stuck but this WAS NEVER BUILT.
- SW2 – 1992 Arrow Pipeline Coaster was revived by after designer, John Wardley rode the prototype Arrow Pipeline Coaster he was not impressed and the project was abandoned.
- SW3 – 1994 Nemesis
- SW4 – 1998 Oblivion
- SW5 – 2002 Air
- SW6 – 2010 Th13teen
- SW7 – 2013 The Smiler
- SW8 – 2018 The Wicker Man
- SW9 – ??
We are expecting further information to become available after the public exhibition on 19th September which we will report here on Theme Park Tourist. What theme would you like SW9 to have? Let us know your thoughts on this rumour by leaving us a comment below or on our Facebook page.
