The Lost Island theme park located in Waterloo, Iowa opened its doors for the first time in June 2022 having broken ground in 2019. It is owned by the Bertch family who opened the Lost Island Water Park, situated just up the road in 2001.
The Lost Island water park truly offers a themed experience and has built a reputation over the last two decades of one of the nation’s best waterparks. Naturally the Bertch family has looked at ways to expand the water park to be a multi-day destination and the answer was a theme park.
Lost Island theme park cost upwards of $100 million and is split into five “realms,” each imbued with a mythology, story, characters, and symbology all of its own. Four of the park’s realms represent elements โ Yuta (earth), Udara (air), Awa (water), and Mura (fire). The fifth realm โ Tamariki (spirit) โ represents the playful, pervasive force that holds them in balance.
According to Screamscape, Lost Island has had a difficult first season with the highly anticipated launch roller coaster and log flume having to be delayed until 2023. As a result of this, attendance has not reached the levels that were expected.
Due to the reduced attendance numbers and reported staffing issues, Lost Island has therefore made the decision to close early for the season and had its last day on Sunday August 28. 2022.
We are confident that when the Lost Island theme park opens in 2023, it will have a very successful second season building on everything that has been learnt this year.
