Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan, has got to be the most anticipated land to be built anywhere in recent years. It is promised to feature a new “realistic” Mario Kart ride, a Yoshi omnimover dark ride attraction that will be a hybrid indoor/outdoor attraction, and loads of interactive experiences that make guests feel like they are inside their favorite Nintendo games.
It is fantastic news to hear that this land is basically complete and was originally planned to debut this summer to coincide with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Like in the case of so many other planned 2020 attractions, Universal Studios Japan has decided to postpone the opening indefinitely over concerns that its popularity could cause a spike in COVID-19 cases in the area.
This week was very exciting for many theme park fans when some new concept art and images were accidentally leaked on vimeo from someone working on Super Nintendo World. Please note that these have not been confirmed as official by Universal Studios Japan, but give us an insight of this hotly anticipated new land.
Universal Studios Japan will be the first Universal theme park to host Super Nintendo World. Universal then had plans for expansions in Hollywood, Orlando and Singapore, although with the current COVID-19 pandemic, we will have to wait to see when and if these come to fruition.
What did this leak tell us?
Screamscape reported that from looking at some of the leaked images, the official name of the MarioKart will be to MarioKart Koopa’s Challenge and is described as “Featuring multiple tracks as well as your favorite levels and characters from Mario Kart, you’ve never experienced fun like this before!”.
MarioKart is said to have a 5 minute ride time with 4 riders per car and each person will have their own steering wheel. The height restriction will be 42 inches if accompanied by an adult and 48 inches if riding by yourself.
There was also a glimpse of what to expect in Yoshi’s Adventure ride with the following description:
“Get on Yoshi’s back, follow Captain Kinopio and set off on a treasure hunt adventure, look at the mushroom kingdom from Mount Beanpole and have fun!”
It also states that Super Nintendo World will also feature shops and a restaurant, Bowser’s Castle and Peach’s Castle. If you want to find out more about this leak and see some more images head to Blooloop.
What has been confirmed already?
Back in November 2019, Universal Studios Japan released a new piece of concept art for the first Super Nintendo World, with familiar landmarks such as Bowser’s Castle, Peach’s Castle, and Toad’s House all in the image. In addition, there seems to be a part of the land the recreates the look of a Super Mario Bros game level, complete with Piranha Plants, question blocks, coins, and warp pipes on the left side of the image.
The Yoshi omnimover dark ride attraction on the right side of the image moves inside from an outdoor track. This seems to confirm that this will indeed be a hybrid indoor/outdoor attraction, which in line with many rumors which have suggested that this ride will not only feature over 40 state-of-the-art animatronics, but also a scenic view of the park from one of the highest points in all of Super Nintendo World.
In addition to the new rides, this new land at Universal Studios Japan is promised to be which will be one of the first fully interactive areas inside any theme park, ever. When guests enter Super Nintendo World, they will be given special Mario magnetic wristbands that will keep track of their score in interactive games around the park. These special bands (which guests can keep) will then sync back to a guest’s Nintendo home console so that they can continue their Super Nintendo World adventure from home.
