LEGOLAND Windsor has just announced that it will permanently close their iconic water rapids ride, Viking River Splash from 25th September, 2023. Although this attraction has had increased downtime of the last couple of years, news of a permanent closure has still certainly come as a shock to LEGOLAND fans.
When Did It Open?
The Viking River Splash opened in 2007 and was manufactured by ABC Rides. It is located on the hillside, includes tight turns, has a fairly small footprint for a river rapids rides and was initially packed with LEGO figures to enjoy as you traversed the course.
Since 2017 the theming has reduced and the experience has diminished with majority of riders only getting a small splash since the removal of the buckets and original effects.
Why is it closing permanently?
Although LEGOLAND has not divulged the exact reason for their decision to permanently close Viking River Splash this September, we know that rapids rides are notorious for being expensive due to their power consumption so running costs could be one of the reasons for LEGOLAND’s decision.
The attraction has seen the reduction in effects and increased downtime in recent years which implies all is not well with the ride system. It also looks tired and in need of some serious TLC which LEGOLAND has obviously decided is not worth the cost.
What is likely to replace it?
Although work is underway for the two new duelling roller coasters coming to LEGOLAND Windsor, could we see the site of Viking River Splash being turned into another roller coaster? Well, according to the video posted to YouTube and embedded above by Theme Park Worldwide, a new family coaster would be a great option. This area could also be used for a new themed area with a number of flat rides or perhaps another water ride.
There is also the chance that LEGOLAND may close Viking River Splash to reimagine it into an entirely new theme although this does seem very unlikely.
We would love to see another roller coaster being built on this site, the hillside location would make for a very exciting family coaster and would be a real focal point for the park.
