It has been exactly two years since Disney confirmed during the 2017 D23 Expo that a Guardians of the Galaxy-inspired attraction would be added to Epcot‘s Future World, and in this time we’ve only gotten a few little updates here and there about what we can expect from this attraction. However, at the 2019 D23 Expo, we finally learned a bit more about this new ride, including (at long last) the name for this experience!
Introducing Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
It was finally confirmed at the 2019 D23 Expo that the name of this new attraction will be Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, a fitting moniker for the first new attraction in the new “Other World” section of Epcot. And in addition to the new name of this attraction, Disney shared some other interesting details about this upcoming ride!
Setting the stage
Though we know that the former Universe of Energy building will house much of the queue for this upcoming ride Disney announced that guests will begin their adventure in something called the “Galaxarium,” which is a planetarium-like exhibition that explores the similarities and mysteries of the formation of Earth’s galaxy and Xandar. Guests will be invited to learn more about the treasures Xandar has to share – until the moment when the Guardians of the Galaxy arrive, and adventures across the cosmos ensue.
A first-of-its-kind “story” coaster
Disney has also announced that this attraction will be a first-of-its kind roller coaster that will feature a new innovation from Walt Disney Imagineering a special ride vehicle that rotates 360 degrees so guests can focus attention on the action of the ride. And that’s not all!
Launching guests into space
Perhaps most exciting for thrill junkies is the announcement that this attraction will feature a reverse launch, which is a first for a Disney coaster.
No opening target was shared at the recent Parks and Resorts panel, but rumors suggest that this attraction is still aiming for a 2021 opening date.
