Many Disney fans had given up all hope for Voyage of the Little Mermaid at Disney’s Hollywood Studios as silence had remained for 3 and a half years since the theme park closures as a result of COVID-19.
It was finally in December 2023 that Disney announced that the very long-shuttered Voyage of the Little Mermaid spectacular indoor show would be reimagined. The original Voyage of the Little Mermaid was a very popular attraction which included the classic retelling of the story of The Little Mermaid live, with Ariel, Flounder, and all their underwater (and land) friends. The story was retold with memorable songs and colorful puppets.
Since December we have heard little about this highly anticipated reimagining and knew little about what Disney had planned. Well, this week Disney has revealed exciting new details for the upcoming “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” which is slated to debut at the Animation Courtyard theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in fall 2024.
In the new video posted to YouTube by Chip and Company we get to see and hear the announcement from the Disney creative team to discover what is planned for this revamped show.
As you can see and hear in the video, we now know that “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” will be an all-new theatrical production inspired by the classic story seen through the eyes of Aerial herself.
We are promised brand new physical sets and a cast of puppets as well as beautiful digital visuals to enhance the story further. The show will include all the songs from the original Voyage of the Little Mermaid as well as two new songs; “Daughters of Triton” and “Kiss the Girl”.
The new physical set looks very impressive from the revealed concept art which is essentially a collage of all of Aerial’s favorite things. The show will feature a mix of live performers and digital puppets that exist in the virtual space which have been animated by the creative team. The new physical sets will blend seamlessly with the digital environment. It will use motion capture technology to enhance the animation which will be used in the epic battle sequence between Ursula and Aerial and Eric.
With these new details now revealed, it just leaves us even more eager to hear the official opening date for “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” which is slated to open later this year.
