Cinderella Castle to get a New Look This Summer

Though Disney has given the Magic Kingdom’s iconic Cinderella Castle several makeovers in years past (to varying degrees of success), it looks like Disney is  going to be updating this magical landmark’s look yet again, in a subtle way that should help bring new life to this half-century old icon. And the good news is, guests visiting Walt Disney world be able to see this new look for Cinderella Castle in the VERY near future!

Cinderella Castle is about to go gold

Instead of doing a massive reimagining for Cinderella Castle, this latest update will be very subtle, with the icon getting gold trim enhancements on windows and turrets as well as over its classic archway. In addition, the blue turret tops will be getting a fresh coat of paint and the upper 2/3 of the castle will be getting a bit of a pinkish tint as well, as you can see in the concept art above, released earlier this week by Disney.

Work has actually already started and will ramp up soon

Though Disney only just announced this project this week, preparations for this project began weeks ago, and barriers are already up along many of waterways surrounding Cinderella Castle to facilitate draining for parts of the moat while work is ongoing in the area. Though we don’t know for sure, some scaffolding may go up while painting is ongoing, but Disney has at least assured guests visiting the Magic Kingdom in the coming weeks of one thing…

Nighttime spectaculars and entertainment will NOT be affected by work on Cinderella Castle

Though you might assume that entertainment options might be limited while work is ongoing at Cinderella Castle, Disney has confirmed that both Happily Ever After and Mickey and Minnie’s Royal Friendship Faire will go on as scheduled while work is being done on Cinderella Castle. And though we don’t know for sure, if scaffolding is used while Cinderella Castle is getting a new look, we’d imagine Disney will simply project Happily Ever After onto  screens, the same way they did at Disneyland when Sleeping Beauty Castle was being refurbished a few years ago.

The castle’s new look will debut in just a few months

Though we’re still a year out from the 50th anniversary of the Magic Kingdom in 2021, it looks like this celebratory castle overlay will be making its debut almost a year early (just in time for the 70th anniversary of the animated feature Cinderella), as work is scheduled to be completed this summer. This makes a lot of sense, as timelines would probably be a little tight if Disney waited until next year, as the Cinderella Dreamlights go up every fall in preparation for the holiday season and come down early in the year, which would cause Disney to miss debuting the new look in time for the start of 2021.

No specific official dates  have been announced for the debut of this golden Cinderella Castle, but as work progresses we’ll keep you updated!
