PLEASE NOTE – this article was originally written on June 13, but it has been updated with the latest information. Just look for the UPDATE sections.
This week has seen a stream of official announcements regarding theme park reopening dates including a number of Six Flags Parks as well as Kings Island. Cedar Point made an announcement on their official website outlining their “tentative opening dates” which includes a phased opening, which understandably has become the norm:
- July 9th and 10th – Open to 2020 Cedar Point Season, Gold and Platinum Passholders ONLY.
- July 11th – Open to Cedar Point Resort Guests and Season Pass holders.
- June 12th to 27th – Cedar Point’s Hotel Breakers and Lighthouse Point RV sites to open.
UPDATE – Cedar Point has confirmed that it will reopen it’s gates on July 9th, following the phased reopening above.
UPDATE – CEDAR POINT SHORES WATERPARK, on Cedar Point’s Info You Need To Know sheet it states “Due to the reduced summer season, Cedar Point Shores Waterpark will not open this year. We anticipate it will be back and better than ever in 2021.”
To adhere to government guidelines, Cedar Point has announced it’s new cleanliness and health & safety protocols which are summarised below:
- Mandatory face masks – guests and employees will be required to wear face masks at all times, except when experiencing water rides, while dining or when inside the RelaxZones, located throughout the park.
- Temperature testing – All guests and employeees must undergo a touchless temperature screening before entering the park.
- Health Screening – using the Cedar Point mobile app, all guests must complete a health screening declaration 24 hours before entering the theme park.
- Social Distancing – markers and signage throughout the park to assist with social distancing of 6ft.
- Ticket Reservation – ALL Guests (including Season Pass holders) MUST make a reservation for your visit – these can be made through the Cedar Point mobile app or www.cedarpoint.com 2020 Cedar Point Season.
UPDATE – Cedar Point’s June 25 update states, that because of limited park capacity, a reservation is required for all guests (including Season Passholders). “The only exception is for those who have booked a stay at our Cedar Point Resorts properties – you’ll get guaranteed access and a reservation will automatically be made for you for each night of your visit.” It says they will reach out to Season Passholders and those who have pre-purchased tickets very soon. Keep checking their social media channels for the latest updates on when this process will be available.
- Touchless transactions
- Limited Employee/guest contact
- Enhanced Cleaning Procedures – in high-touch areas, dining locations, hotel rooms and restrooms.
- Additional hand sanitization stations – throughout the park.
- Capacity management – throughout the park.
I suppose it won’t come as a big surprise that there will be mandatory mask wearing, and we are guessing that like with Universal Orlando Resort and Walt Disney World it will be from age 2 and above, although there hasn’t been an actual age stated that can be easily seen. Masks will have to be removed for eating and drinking.
As this safety measure is in place, it will be interesting to see if Cedar Point adopts a similar strategy that Universal Orlando has with its U-Rest areas, certain small sections of the park that allow guests to relax with their households without wearing masks but whilst social distancing.
UPDATE – Guidance on Face coverings has been updated on the official site and says “Face coverings may only be removed when experiencing water rides, while dining or when inside the RelaxZones, located throughout the park. In the RelaxZone, you may remove your face covering, provided social distancing of 6ft/2m is maintained between your party and other guests.”
Social distancing measures will take place in ride queues and on rides/attractions. Markers will be placed in queue areas and households will be seated together with spaces in between on rides. Some rides that don’t allow for social distancing measures will be closed at the moment. Details of these rides can be seen on the mobile app.
New measures in place for guests’ convenience
Cedar Point are “inviting” guests to download the free Cedar Point mobile app to facilitate their visit to the park. This is probably a very good idea for anyone wanting to go to the park when it reopens as you can use the mobile app to make a reservation when they become available.
UPDATE – it now says on the official site that “Mobile App Required, At least one member of your group must have the park mobile app on their phone.”
