A Walt Disney World vacation is an experience full of magical moments. From enchanting character encounters to mesmerizing attractions, guests flock to The Most Magical Place on Earth every day expecting the see dreams come to life and fantasy made reality.
Spontaneous “magical moments” brought about by thoughtful cast members can easily become the highlight of a trip. These special experiences are wholly unique, and not every guest can expect to have them. You can’t just ask for them. Magical moments represent the personal touch that sets Disney apart from many of their competitors. It’s the surprise attention lauded on a honeymooning couple, the stormtrooper escort for a tiny Captain Phasma, or the miraculous free ice cream pass that appears when your little one drops their Mickey ice cream sandwich onto Main Street.
Have you ever experienced a Walt Disney World magical moment? Here our some of our favorites we’ve experienced or seen!
1. Unexpected celebrations
It started off as a typical bus ride between our resort and Magic Kingdom. My husband and I sat surfing the web on our phones as the bus chugged along, excited for our evening in the park but not paying attention to much else. Halfway through the ride, the bus driver made an announcement over the intercom.
“Ladies and gentleman, I have a very important announcement to share with you. We have a prince and princess on board with us celebrating an extra magical anniversary today!”
We looked up at each other, realizing at that moment we were both wearing our “Happy Anniversary” celebration buttons. The entire bus applauded us. We laughed as the bus driver had the whole bus sing “Happy Anniversary to you” to us. It was a seriously adorable magical moment that made our day.
If you are celebrating anything at all, from a birthday to a graduation, make sure you wear a celebration button on your next Disney vacation. You never know what will happen. Disney can’t guarantee VIP treatment for every one of the millions of guests who visit for a celebration, but somehow, they manage to make these visits magical every time. From free desserts to surprise character encounters, you never can guess what to expect when that one cast member with a mischievous glint in their eye catches wind that you are visiting on a special day.
Another favorite magic moment happened when I was celebrating a birthday at Epcot. As an adult visitor without kids, I didn’t expect too much in the way of special treatment. We were walking through World Showcase when an eager janitor from Columbia spotted my celebration button. He swept up to my husband and I, took my hand like I was the Queen and asked me if he could sing me the birthday song. When I agreed, he proceeded to sing a full opera style aria rendition of Happy Birthday in front of all the passing guests. It was hilarious. He sent my husband and I off with blessings, and we will never forget that magical moment so long as we live!
2. Character magic
For families with kids, stories abound regarding magical moments with Disney’s resident characters. Anyone who has ever visited Gaston in Fantasyland will know you never can guess what will happen when characters decide to take things to the next level.
We’ve heard stories of Disney princesses spontaneously knowing the names of approaching little girls before they arrive (thanks to listening attendants nearby). A video of a little boy dressed as Kylo Ren went viral when he was given a full stormtrooper escort through Disney Hollywood Studios. One family described an unprecedented encounter where Aladdin took their daughter on a full speed running tour of Epcot’s Morocco, and others have described rare occasions early in the morning when characters have even hopped on rides with astonished young guests. With character meet and greets being more strictly scheduled, these moments may seem harder to come by, but Disney still makes them happen time and time again!
3. Magical access
I’ve told this story before on Theme Park Tourist, but another favorite magical memory for my family happened at The Seas with Nemo and Friends. It was our first anniversary and the first time our whole immediate family was able to visit Walt Disney World. We had just listened attentively to a dolphin training presentation. Both my mother and mother-in-law have a special love for animals, so we stayed after for a bit to ask the trainer some questions about the dolphins and how all the fish in the Seas are so carefully looked after. I don’t know if it was the celebration buttons some of us had on, but the trainer had our entire family gather at one of the Cast Member only doors then took us upstairs to the viewing bay above the dolphin tank where we had a private opportunity to meet the dolphins. I have never seen or heard of this happening again, but it was truly magical!
Other guests have described getting surprise access to VIP seating for fireworks on a busy night after simply asking where a good spot to enjoy the show was. In other cases, guests have ended up being picked as unexpected participants in parades and shows… and no one can deny the magic when a little one gets to participate in Jedi temple training!
4. Meeting someone from your home town
This is one of those magical moments that is just so cool when it happens, especially if you are not from a large city (or Florida). Disney cast members all proudly wear the name of their hometown on their name badges. We have had some seriously fun moments with cast members from our hometown (who inevitably test us to see if we know the city’s most famous taco stop). One of these encounters earned us an exclusive DVC trading pin when the cast member saw we were pin collectors. We have also had encounters with cast members in Epcot who struck up conversation in their native language with our German family. If you see someone from your home area, say hello!
5. Unexpected VIP treatment
Room upgrades, VIP seating, and Fastpasses are never guaranteed—but wow, is it cool when Disney magical moments result in upgrades! We’ve experienced a number of magical moments over the years at Disney resorts, but most recently, we had some unexpected pixie dust at the Walt Disney World Swan after mentioning in our reservation that we were celebrating a birthday. Not only did the insanely friendly front desk clerk give us a number of vouchers for free ice cream and a free drink. They also upgraded our room—and this wasn’t even technically a Disney cast member!
Sometimes magical moments even emerge when Disney misses the mark. In an incident described in a past article, we had a less than magical experience at Epcot’s Garden Grill after years of that restaurant being one of our favorites. Despite the issues with food quality we ran into on that visit, one thing remained constant—the cast members did everything they could to make things right. At the end of that very awkward meal, in a gesture I have never seen before at Walt Disney World, the manager came out of the restaurant to greet us and comped our meal. She also offered to get us any meal we wanted from Sunshine Seasons, and she gave our whole family Fastpasses to Soarin’. This is an extremely rare occurrence, but it meant the world to our family and really made us feel the love as lifelong repeat guests.
