Splash Mountain is one of the Magic Kingdom’s most popular attractions. It closed on January 10 for its annual refurbishment and is now back open again. It was due to reopen at the start of the day but didn’t. Fortunately it did open towards the end of the afternoon with wait times instantly growing to 60 minutes+. The reason for this delay is unknown.
Back in June 2020, Disney announced that Splash Mountain would be getting a massive re-theme which would see it completely reimagined into an attraction featuring Princess Tiana from Princess and the Frog. The Princess and the Frog attraction would use the same ride system as Splash Mountain to tell a story that happens after the ending of the movie with Princess Tiana and Louis floating along on a musical adventure – featuring some of the iconic tunes from the film – as they prepare for their first-ever Mardi Gras performance.
The news that Splash Mountain was to be reimagined caused an outcry by many fans. After the initial announcement there were further details released including concept art but still no date for when the work would start.
In August 2021, after over a year since the initial announcement, we learnt that due to COVID-19 we weren’t likely to see this huge transformation for a long time and we are still waiting to hear when we can expect to see the infamous Splash Mountain closing for this Princess and the Frog transformation to take place at Magic Kingdom and Disneyland.
The good news right now is that the annual refurbishment is now complete and Splash Mountain can be enjoyed once again by fans at the Magic Kingdom. We will keep you up to date on details of the long awaited Princess and the Frog reimagining on our news and Facebook page.
