The Verge reported this week that The VOID may be planning to make a comeback having been acquired by Hyper Reality Partners after the IP was transferred to a creditor in late 2020.
With Hyper Reality Partners looking to expand their business, this could be the right time for The VOID to reinvent itself and make what for many fans would be a welcome come back. Due to the developments in Virtual Reality technology, including the move towards lighter standalone VR headsets, the experience is likely to build on what went before and the results surely would be amazing to see.
The VOID Virtual Reality Arcade was once located both in the Marketplace area of Disney Springs and also in a location at Disneyland Resort’s Downtown Disney district. Both locations closed in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fans of The VOID which boasted both a Star Wars and Wreck-It-Ralph experience were understandably disappointed but expected the locations would reopen alongside the parks when it was safe to do so.
However, in July 2020 it was clear that the VR company was having financial difficulties and a notice appeared on the doors of the Downtown Disney location citing a breach of the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures license, saying that The VOID must stop using any Disney intellectual property (IP), Disney promotional material, trademarks and/or confidential information. The VOID then shut down permanently.
If The VOID did make a comeback, it will remain to be seen whether Disney will consider rekindling their partnership with the VR company after the difficult ending in 2020. Let us know your thoughts on The VOID by leaving us a comment below or on our Facebook page.
