It has been reported by Screamscape, via a reader seeing a sign at the park, that Vertical Velocity at Six Flags Great America is now closed for the rest of the 2021 season.
But do not despair, the sign currently sitting outside the entrance to Vertical Velocity states “Will be back in a Flash in 2022” which confirms that this ride is undoubtedly going to remain. It has, however, led to the rumor that this ride has an overhaul in store with the likely theme being, surprise surprise, perhaps based on the DC comic character, ‘Flash’.
This rumor seems even more likely due to the fact that in 2019, V2 at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom was re-branded “The Flash: Vertical Velocity” with the track being painted red and the supports yellow. The area surrounding V2 contained other DC based rides and therefore became DC Universe.
At Six Flags Great America both The Joker and Batman: The Ride are fairly close to the location of Vertical Velocity so it would make sense to re-brand it to Flash especially as there is due to be a Flash feature film due to be released in November 2022.
Vertical Velocity is an Intamin Twisted Impulse Coaster, originally opened in 2001, reaching a height of 185ft and a speed of 70mph. This somewhat unusual-looking inverted coaster has a (literal) twist. Riders sit in classic inverted coaster cars, which dangle underneath the ride’s track. They are then launched up to a top speed of 70 miles per hour, climbing a near-vertical, twisting tower.
It will be exciting to see if this current rumor for Vertical Velocity pans out for the 2022 season. Let us know what you think by leaving us a comment below or on our Facebook page. To see our full Park Guide of Six Flags Great America click here.
