Listen – nobody loves Universal Orlando more than we do. Here at Theme Park Tourist, we recently looked at 12 Universal Orlando Exclusives That Should Make Disney World Fans Jealous; we explored how Universal Express handily beats out Disney Genie+; we sang the praises of Universal’s Islands of Adventure as an industry-changing park, and we lovingly offered four kinds of rides Universal really needs if it wants to match Disney. No one roots for Universal’s success quite like we do, and even if we wonder if Epic Universe may stretch the resort’s resources too thin, there’s no question that the future is bright for Universal Parks & Resorts.
But we also have to face facts. Though there are ways in which Universal clearly provides a better experience than Disney (and that looks to continue given Disney’s current leadership), there are some areas in which Disney just dominates, and probably always will.
Today, we’ve collected four areas in which Disney clearly wins out… and maybe, can’t be beat at all, no matter how hard Universal tries. Do you think Universal could ever overcome Disney in these categories? What would it take for Universal to suddenly become a front-runner in these areas?
1. Intellectual Property
There’s absolutely nowhere we could begin a list of areas where Disney Parks just can’t be beat than the most obvious: Disney IP.
Don’t get us wrong… Of all the quickly-consolidating IP portfolios of mega-conglomerate media companies in the 2020s, Comcast must have the second best. Universal’s catalog of classics (E.T., Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, The Mummy, King Kong, Transformers, Jaws, Fast & Furious, Bourne, and the Universal Monsters) combined with DreamWorks animation (Shrek, How To Train Your Dragon, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda) and Illumination (Despicable Me, Minions, Secret Life of Pets, and Sing) arms Universal Orlando with incredible properties.
Pre-existing agreements also make Harry Potter, The Simpsons, and Marvel superheroes Universal exclusives as theme parks go. That’s absolutely incredible.
But of course, it’s unfortunately a distant second to Disney. Five of the top ten highest grossing media franchises (Mickey & Friends, Winnie the Pooh, Star Wars, Disney Princesses, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe) are nested under Disney. Purchases of ABC, ESPN, The Muppets, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 20th Century Fox have amassed over $100 billion in characters, stories, and brands. Between them, there’s not a demographic Disney doesn’t dominate. The Streaming Wars juggernaut of “Disney + Pixar + Marvel + Star Wars + National Geographic + Hulu” is literally unbeatable.
But despite Bob Chapek’s apparent thinking on the matter, it’s so much more than just “franchises” or “acquisitions” or “revenue.” Disney is responsible for the definitive versions of stories and characters that have defined not just animation, but pop culture. The Little Mermaid. Beauty and the Beast. Aladdin. Frozen. The Lion King. Sleeping Beauty. Cinderella.
Mickey Mouse. Winnie the Pooh. Adding Woody & Buzz, Rey & Kylo Ren, Mike & Sulley, Han Solo & Princess Leia, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man, Avatar, The Mandalorian & Grogu, Wanda & Vision, Darth Vader… I mean, it’s unimaginable, and having access to those life-defining characters is priceless.
But it’s not just the characters created by Disney’s studios or acquired by its executives… Which brings us to…
2. Imagineering Originals
One of the most fundamental differences between Universal Parks and Disney Parks is as simple as it comes: the work of Disney Imagineering.
Don’t get us wrong… Universal Creative is a design powerhouse in its own right, and draws from many of the same creatives, contractors, and leaders who work with Disney. Both design studios are capable of making the worlds of Avatar, Star Wars, Nintendo, Harry Potter, Cars, The Simpsons, Jurassic World, Frozen, and so many more real, and their modern projects are truly great compliments and companions.
The difference comes down to Imagineering’s origins. As old as Disneyland itself, the first generation of Imagineers were background artists and animators hand-selected by Walt himself to work on the very new kind of project that Disneyland represented. Obviously, Disney’s own films were part of that from the beginning (see Opening Day Originals like Peter Pan’s Flight or the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea exhibit), but Imagineers also designed entirely original places, stories, and characters…
From Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Dreamfinder and Figment, to modern creations like S.E.A., Expedition Everest, TEST TRACK; even “expanded” stories, like the lore of Black Spire Outpost, The Hollywood Tower Hotel, or the Temple of the Forbidden Eye represent Imagineers who are empowered to create something original.
Now sure – it’s been a long time since Disney Parks in the United States have built a major, IP-free attraction, and arguably, rides like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, Space Mountain, and Journey into Imagination would never get the greenlight today. That’s a real shame considering how each of those has proven that Imagineering Originals can become timeless IPs in their own right, fueling merchandise and media and fandom.
It makes sense that “originals” are rarer at Universal, which got into the theme park business during the “Ride the Movies” era as a “studio park,” briefly did something different (but still “franchise” oriented) with Islands of Adventure, then promptly returned to movie-related things. Universal’s most recent park – Universal Studios Beijing – is laid out like an “Islands” park, but is stuffed exclusively with blockbuster movie lands – Despicable Me, Transformers, Kung-Fu Panda, Harry Potter, and Jurassic World.
In Orlando, both Port of Entry and the Lost Continent at Islands of Adventure are “originals,” but between them, only one attraction – the Declassified Disaster: Poseidon’s Fury – remains as an example of a park-original “IP.” It would be great if Universal generated more in-house “content” to populate its parks outside of Halloween Horror Nights. Until then, those historic, “original” Disney rides remain among Disney’s strongest and most iconic… proof of just how important thinking outside the box office can be.
3. Experiential Dining
Whether you love or hate the rigamarole that goes into planning a Walt Disney World vacation, there’s no question that if the stars align, dining can be as memorable as any ride. Whether you’re talking about signature snacks (Dole Whips, Citrus Swirls, Blue Milk, or EPCOT festival booths), solid Quick Service (Satu’li Canteen, Docking Bay 7, Columbia Harbor House, Flame Tree Barbecue), iconic Table Service (‘50s Prime Time Cafe, Sci-Fi Dine In Theater, Be Our Guest, Space 220) or signature “fine dining” (across World Showcase and in many Deluxe Resorts), Disney is pretty good at dining.
On the whole, dining is generally a much less significant piece of a Universal visit. In general, Universal’s Quick Service restaurants tend to default to burgers, pizza, fries, salads, sometimes spaghetti. But if you’re going to Islands of Adventure, choosing Cafe 4, or Croissant Moon Bakery, or Burger Digs, or food from a stall wouldn’t be something you plan for and get excited about.
On the Table Service end, each of Universal’s parks hosts two (Lombard’s & Finnegan’s at the Studios; Confisco Grill & Mythos at Islands). But whereas Disney’s most sought-after restaurants are 100% booked 60-days out all year round (6 months out pre-COVID), securing reservations for Universal’s full service restaurants is nice, but generally available until days or even hours before the meal.
We’re not saying Universal should aspire to the frenzied levels of Disney’s dining (which adds massive frustration to the already-exhausting planning process), but altogether, dining feels like one of the areas in which Universal could step it up.
The exception, of course, is in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter where the Three Broomsticks (in Hogsmeade) and the Leaky Cauldron (in Diagon Alley) have lines out the door all day. The unique “hybrid service” restaurants are high capacity, delicious, and “authentic” in their menus and atmosphere.
Universal clearly learned a lesson here (see Krusty Burger in Springfield) and hopefully, such “in-universe” dining options become the norm in Epic Universe and then see major improvements back at the older parks. Until then, Disney’s clearly figured out how to make dining an important part of a trip.
4. Pop Culture Prominence
If there’s one area in which Universal stands approximately zero chance of beating Disney, it’s in pop culture prominence. Put simply, Disney is Disney. It stands among global, iconic, recognizable brands like Apple and McDonalds and Coca Cola and Google – a sort of god tier of brands that conjure immediate images and emotions and expectations. You know exactly what Disney “is.” Even people who don’t “follow” the entertainment industry like you and I know what’s Disney and what isn’t; what’s Pixar and what isn’t; what’s Marvel and what isn’t; what Disney owns and what it doesn’t.
NBCUniversal? Not so much. NBC has a fairly strong brand (think The Office, 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, SNL), and maybe the general public would be able to associate Universal with properties like Jurassic Park and Jaws and Back to the Future… But maybe not. (That’s probably why Universal chose NBC’s branding as that of its streaming service, Peacock rather than going with Universal+.)
Just about everyone on Earth has a favorite Disney character. But a favorite “Universal character?” Does that exist in the popular lexicon? Do people associate Shrek or Gru or Doc Brown or Alan Grant with Universal specifically? Folks proudly proclaim in Twitter profiles, bumper stickers, dating apps, and license plates that they’re “Disney fans,” but self-identified “Universal fans” are farther between.
The cool thing is that those who identify as “Universal fans” probably do so because of the theme parks, proving what an incredible role theme parks can play in building and maintaining those associations. Because of Universal Orlando, the name Universal probably does conjure images of Jurassic Park, and Fast & Furious, and maybe even the classics like Jaws and Kong and Earthquake and Back to the Future for many people. (It also earns an association with properties Universal does not actually own like Harry Potter and The Simpsons and Marvel and Dr. Seuss, but oh well.)
Look – visiting Disney World is practically a rite of passage; sold as a “must do” for any self-respecting middle-class-or-better American family. Pop culture tells us that Disney World is worth taking out a second mortgage; the end-all-be-all of family destinations, worth forgoing international travel to re-visit. Maybe somewhere in the multiverse, Universal Orlando has surpassed that… but in our world, it’s clear that pop culture favors Disney.
And even if slashed perks and new upcharges make more and more people look anew at Universal and its incredible theme park investments, you just can’t beat Disney’s IP, its history, or its place in pop culture… At least, not in this universe.
