The 9 BIG Updates from Walt Disney World (and Beyond) This Week (July 15-21, 2019)

This week at Walt Disney World, Disney announces a new nighttime show for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, a new dance party is announced for Disney Springs, plus a Tomorrowland favorite unexpectedly closes for refurbishment. 

Outside Walt Disney World, Universal confirms a brand new house for Halloween Horror Nights, SeaWorld announces yet another discount, plus a new concert series kicks off

1. Astro Orbiter closes for unplanned refurbishment

Though it was unannounced, the Astro Orbiter at the Magic Kingdom closed down last week, and will remain closed as part of an unplanned refurbishment until at least the middle of next month, with a tentative reopening date of August 15 2019.

2. Descendants 3 Dance Party coming to Disney Springs and then the Magic Kingdom

Disney Springs will host the all new DescenDANCE Party in celebration of the release of the Descendants 3 movie. The dance party will take place July 26 – August 11 2019, from 7:30pm to 10:30pm on the Marketplace Stage at Disney Springs before moving to Tomorrowland for Mickey’s Not-so-Scary Halloween Party beginning on August 16.

3. Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular announced for Mickey’s Not-so-Scary Halloween Party

Disney has finally announced that the long-running Happy HalloWishes will not be returning, and its its place will be a new show that will feature state-of-the-art projection effects, lasers, lighting and dazzling fireworks that come together to tell a not-so-scary story about how anything can happen on Halloween night.

According to Disney the show will be hosted by Jack Skellington from Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” serving as the host. Jack’s ghost dog, Zero, will carry everyone along on a trick-or-treating adventure, where four friends – Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy – find themselves drawn into a mysterious haunted house. Their journey takes them from one room of the house to another, encountering dancing skeletons, waltzing ghosts and a whole series of troublemaking Disney villains.

4. Kylo Ren character moving out of the Star Wars Launch Bay

On the same day next month that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens Disney will be closing the Kylo Ren character meet and greet at the Star Wars Launch Bay, presumably due to Kylo Ren’s presence inside this new land. Kylo Ren is being replaced at the Star Wars Launch Bay by original trilogy villain Darth Vader. 

5. Disney Skyliner to officially open in September

Disney has confirmed that on September 29, 2019 the Disney Skyliner gondolas will take flight and officially begin transporting guests around Walt Disney World Resort. If you’ve been to Walt Disney World recently, you’ve probably seen the gondolas flying around Disney’s Hollywood Studios this summer while Disney has been testing this system. 

6. New Lion King scavenger hunt now available at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

In celebration of the new live action Lion King, gusts can now participate in a fun new scavenger hunt around Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Guests can find hidden characters around Harambe, mark a special map with a sticker and then return the map for a prize at Mombasa Marketplace in Harambe or The Outpost Shop in the Oasis by September 28.

Guests can purchase the scavenger hunt map for $6.99 from the Outpost Shop, Discovery Trading Company, Island Mercantile, or Mombasa Marketplace.

7. Universal Orlando Resort announces Ghostbusters house for Halloween Horror Nights

Universal Orlando Resort has announced yet another house for this year’s Halloween Horror Nights event: Ghostbusters! This new house is based on the first film, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Here’s the official synopsis of the house:

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, you’ll jump through the movie screen of the original 1984 film and walk through some of your favorite scenes like the New York Public Library, the Temple of Gozer and more.

In this haunted house, you’ll be transported to the streets of New York as the rift between worlds opens, releasing ghoulish spirits, hideous specters and ectoplasm-dripping phantasms in every shape and size. Come face-to-face with the voracious Slimer, the all-power Gozer the Gozerian, Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man and more.

Peter, Ray, Egon and Winston will have to save the day as these paranormal creatures materialize in unexpected places – but will their proton packs be enough?

8. SeaWorld Orlando reveals summer concert lineup

It may already be halfway through July, but summer is rolling on at SeaWorld Orlando, with the SeaWorld Summer Concert Series kicking off this weekend and continuing for the next few weeks with the following acts: 
  • Colt Ford— July 20-21
  • Vertical Horizon— July 27-28
  • Jefferson Starship— August 3-4
  • Blood, Sweat and Tears— August 10-11
