3D Vs 2D – Which Is Best On Skull Island: Reign Of Kong At Universal’s Islands of Adventure?

It has been in the news this week that Universal has been testing Skull Island: Reign of Kong at Islands of Adventure in 2D rather than 3D meaning there is currently no need for guests to wear the usual 3D glasses.

Skull Island: Reign of Kong opened at Islands of Adventure in July 2016 and features a mix of screen-based and practical effects, and became the longest ride in Universal Orlando Resort’s history when it opened. After making their way to “base camp” through the queue line, guests board enormous safari trucks before being taking on an adventure deep into Skull Island’s jungle. Naturally, things go wrong…fast.

Although we currently don’t have confirmation whether this change will be a permanent one it will be interesting to see guests reactions to this news. Naturally for some guests who perhaps suffer from visual impairments or motion sickness this may well come as welcome news. However, for other guests who enjoy the immersive nature of the 3D experience there is likely going to be disappointment.

From what is being said it seems as if Universal is choosing to move away from 3D in attractions where it makes minimal enhancement such has been the case with Despicable Me Minion Mayhem. 3D projections can still be experienced at Universal Orlando Resort on the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, Transformers: The Ride, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts and Race Through New York starring Jimmy Fallon.

As Skull Island: Reign of Kong uses a mix of physical sets and screens it seems to be a natural contender for Universal to experiment with by trying it out in 2D.

Should Skull Island: Reign of Kong use 3D or 2D projections? Let us know your thoughts by voting in our poll and by leaving us a comment below or on our Facebook page.
